I dropped the second deposit and waited with my burner phone. Time passed, and I started to pace.

An hour later, they responded. I answered it before the phone rang a second time.

“Ian, what can we do you out of?” I think it was Chaz on the line.

“I have a few questions regarding a variety of topics. Are you free to talk for a few?”

“We’ll see. Depends on the questions.”

“Fair enough.” I gathered my wits and started with the most important things first. “How can we ensure that the people dropping the request are square?”

“I’m not sure what you mean.”

“This last job. There is no Felipe Gomez. That personality is a creation of one Rachel Smith, who is bottled up in a fortress. I sure as hell wouldn’t take that job for only a couple mil. It would take a long time to pull off that gig.”

“That’s interesting. The requestor has upped their marker to five million dollars on that job.”

“Still for Felipe Gomez?”

“It is.”

“I’m rejecting it right now. There is no Felipe Gomez, at least not one who runs a drug cartel in Tucson.”

“That’s interesting. I expect you know this because you went there and checked it out.”

“I can’t put any of my people in harm’s way for a DEA contract on the wrong person.”

Silence on the other end of the line.

“Do you have any other questions?”

“Switching to the training…” I no longer needed to fight that battle because Chaz had given me the answer I had been looking for. “Would you like to review my plan, outlines, and logistics? Then, who will take care of getting the word out?”

“We’ll take care of letting people know. Once you have that package ready, drop it in the back end. You’ll find a spot in the lower left-hand corner of the screen. If you let your cursor hover for five seconds, it will come up with a link. Click that, and it’ll take you to an encrypted input form. You can send anything that way. You don’t need to burn up your money making deposits to request phone calls.”

“Isn’t an open contact system like that vulnerable?”

“We have the best people guaranteeing our cybersecurity. No one will be checking our email anytime soon, if ever. And we trust that those who know this is available don’t share it with anyone else, no matter the circumstances.”

“There’s no way I’ll crack. Deny, deny, deny. That’s the only way to deal with any kind of law enforcement. You don’t have to worry about me. But for the training, I hope that you’ll be able to share your experience, assuming you’ll be able to make it.”

“I think I will. Needless to say, I haven’t talked about most of it with anyone, ever.”

“Time to bring the next generation up to speed,” I suggested.

“I think you’re right. It is time if we’re to grow. It’s looking good for new work. Lots of new work. Would you be able to handle three new packages if I dropped them on you?”

“I’ll do my best.
